Lectio is designed for Christian publishers, ministries, and translation teams that need more control than a fluent machine translation can provide. Its central operating principle is straightforward: AI can draft, but the team decides what theological terms mean, which Bible wording is authoritative, and whether each paragraph is ready to move forward.
That distinction matters in Christian publishing. A translation can read naturally while still choosing the wrong sense of a theological term or re-rendering a quoted verse. Lectio’s workflow places those decisions before or alongside drafting, so reviewers can inspect the choices that shaped the text rather than treating the generated paragraph as an opaque result.
Scripture is handled as source material
A particularly clear workflow concerns Bible quotations. Teams review identified quotations in context and provide the wording from the target-language Bible translation they have chosen. Once saved, that wording is protected while Lectio translates the surrounding paragraph.
This is a practical fit for books that quote Scripture frequently. It reduces the risk of an AI draft subtly changing a verse, paraphrasing it, or mixing translations. The process also distinguishes quotations from ordinary prose: a passage can be marked as not a quotation when it should be translated normally. The limitation is equally important. Lectio does not supply the ministry’s preferred Bible wording in the workflow described on the site. Someone on the team must identify the quotation and provide the exact target-language text. That is appropriate for editorial control, but it adds preparation work.
Terminology decisions happen per occurrence
Lectio’s glossary model is more nuanced than a simple project-wide replacement list. When a source term has multiple approved senses, the system can flag the occurrence and recommend a contextually appropriate option. A translator then confirms, changes, or manually enters the form for that instance.
That approach is useful for terms whose meaning changes with context. It also creates a review checkpoint before the sentence is drafted, which can prevent a technically valid but theologically unsuitable translation from becoming the default. Teams should still expect subject-matter expertise: a recommendation is not a theological verdict, and the source describes human confirmation as part of the process.
Document and team workflow
Lectio is aimed at publication work rather than isolated text conversion. The site says it works with Word, InDesign, and ODT structures, preserving elements such as styles, footnotes, tables, images, and chapter organization. It also describes continued work during unreliable connectivity, with synchronization when the connection returns.
The review model supports paragraph-level refinement, reviewer suggestions, recorded confirmations, and assigned project steps. This makes Lectio better suited to accountable ministry workflows than a single-user translation scratchpad. The tradeoff is that teams will need to define roles, terminology, Scripture sources, and review stages before the system can deliver its intended value.
Who should evaluate Lectio
Lectio is most relevant to Christian publishers, Bible-focused ministries, discipleship-resource teams, and translators working on books or curriculum where terminology and Scripture accuracy are central. It is less obviously suited to broad commercial localization, large connector ecosystems, or straightforward document translation; the source itself positions it as a narrower alternative to general CAT tools.
For an evaluation, start with a short chapter containing theological terms, several Scripture quotations, footnotes, and the target language’s typography requirements. Measure how much preparation the team needs, whether the review checkpoints match its governance model, and how well the exported publication structure survives the workflow. The key question is not simply whether Lectio produces fluent drafts. It is whether the team can explain, review, and approve the decisions behind them.
