ByteDance’s overseas AI product Dola, the international counterpart of Doubao, has recently faced restrictions on ad campaigns. According to public reports from cross-border industry media, Meta has limited paid advertisements for multiple ByteDance products in seven key markets starting October 8. The affected regions include Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and other core growth markets for Dola, which directly disrupts its user acquisition channels.
Dola previously relied heavily on paid ads to drive user growth. It targets emerging markets across Southeast Asia and Latin America, attracting users with a free tier and lightweight multilingual AI capabilities. Sensor Tower data for Q1 2026 shows Dola’s total downloads have exceeded 200 million. These ad restrictions force Dola to shift its growth strategy from paid acquisition to organic search, social media content and developer ecosystems, putting its growth timeline under pressure.
Industry sources note the restrictions apply not only to Dola but also to other ByteDance offerings in its AI lineup, including the image-generation tool Dreamina and short-drama app PineDrama. TikTok faces relatively minor impact. As Dola is still scaling its user base and heavily reliant on Meta’s ad network, its near-term user expansion will face headwinds.
Built on the Seed large model, Dola offers conversational AI, image generation, code assistance and multilingual translation for global users. Meanwhile, BytePlus continues to expose Seed model APIs, delivering MaaS services for overseas developers and enterprises. Going forward, ByteDance’s dual-track overseas strategy combining consumer-facing Dola and business-focused BytePlus model services will place greater emphasis on organic traffic and developer ecosystem building.
